Sending Email without showing all of the addresses – Blind Carbon Copies – BCC When you want to address emails without showing all of the addresses: · Open your address book · Select the person · Click on the BCC button

Continue selecting and clicking BCC until you have selected all of the people for this message and then click on OK. 
All of the addressees will be listed with BCC in front. You will be able to see the names and addresses but the recipients will not. 
Setting up a new List in your Address Book - Netscape A List enables you to send one message to a group of people by selecting only one address. In Netscape Open your address book (click on Communicator – Address Book) and click the New List button 
Type the name of your list in the List Name box. Type the names of the members of the list in the area provided. Once the computer can recognize the name you are typing, it will fill in the rest of the information needed or provide a drop down list that you can select from. You can just press enter to accept the fill in and start on the next name. 
Click on OK when you have finished typing the names in the list. 
Internet Explorer uses Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. New List or Group Open the program and click on Tools – Address Book. Select New – New Group 
Type the group name and then click on Select Members 
You can type the name or click on it in the list and then click select 
When you have finished adding names, click on OK. 
Forwarding an email In your email program, click on the message that you want to forward and then click on the forward button.
To forward the message without all of the addresses Click and drag over the message. Select Edit – Copy Click on New Message Click in the message area Select Edit – Paste Address your message Type in your subject Click on Send 
To open an attachment Before you open an attachment.
Make sure you know who sent it. Make sure there is a reason for you to receive it. Check to see what type of document or program it is This area will give some idea of what program made it and will be needed to open it. Never open one that ends in exe,
There are many legitimate reasons for sending attachments. Your director will send many documents that you can save and modify to your own specifications. To save these, click on the name of the attachment. You will then get a screen similar to this. If you do not get this type of screen then the attachment will either open or will be saved somewhere on your disk. With this screen you can chose to open the document. Then you can see what it is and save it where you really want to have it. NEVER REMOVE THIS CHECK When you chose to open an attachment you may be asked to find the program. You will have to navigate and select the program. Most programs will be found on drive C in the Programs folder. The last three letters of the attachment name indicates the type of program Doc – word processor like Word, Word Perfect or WorksPub – Publisher Jpg – a photo editor like Mic rosoft Picture ItGif – a photo editor like Mic rosoft Picture ItXls – Excel, Lotus or Works Pdf – Adobe Acrobat Reader 
Sending Attachments Create your email document. There will be a button (normally a paper clip) to permit you to do an attachment. Click on the paper clip, navigate to your file and double click on the file. The complete file will not show in your document but will appear as an attachment to the recipients.

Creating a folder in your email program.
Folders can help you organize those emails that you want to keep for future reference. To create a new folder click on File – New Folder. By using the drop down menu you will then have a choice of where your new folder will be placed. They folders will be displayed in alphabetical order within each area. 
This is Netscape’s new folder popup window.
This is Outlook’s mail screen. Personal folders are shown in the My Shortcuts window. Often we know that we saved something and what we think we named it but only the computer knows where it may be. This will help you find it. On your desktop (that is the term for the way your computer looks before you do anything) double click on the My Computer Icon
You will see a popup menu showing all of the drives on your computer. Click once on drive C to indicate which drive you want to search. Select File – Search or Find (different versions of Windows will use different terms)
You will see a new window. The one shown is for Windows ME. But all will have similar areas. Type enough of what you think the name may be to narrow the search somewhat. You can see by the example what happens when you type "Mary Kay" If you can put the suffix on the name you will narrow the search tremendously. Once you have found your file in the listing you can either double click on the name or note the location for future reference. This process will place an image from the internet in a folder on your disk so that you can use it again later. Open your browser (please use Internet Explorer.) Navigate to the page that has the image you want to use. Move your cursor over the and click once with the RIGHT mouse button. This will show a popup menu. Click with the LEFT mouse button on Save Picture As…
A new popup menu will appear. The white bar near the top is asking where you want to save the picture on disk. Be consistent! Put your pictures in the same place all the time and then you can find them. In this class please click on the small arrow on the right side of the “Save In” bar and then click on drive A in the pop up menu. The white bar near the bottom labeled “File Name” is asking what to name the file. You can rename it to a title that makes sense to you. In this case just type “Time Machine”. Leave the “Save as Type” bar alone unless you really know you need it in another format. Click on SAVE. The picture will be there when you need it. Some email programs allow you to put backgrounds in your emails. I recommend that you DO NOT do this. The programs that don’t accept them make the email unreadable and you do not know what program the recipients use. Enabling HTML formattingTo put images in your e-mail messages, you must first make sure your HTML formatting is enabled. Oh, don't let the acronym for HyperText Mark-up Language intimidate you. HTML is the name of the code that is used on most of the internet for websites and can be used in e-mail messages. Here's how to enable HTML formatting: 1. Click the Tools menu on the toolbar, then click Options. The Options dialog box will appear. 2. Click the Send tab. Under "Mail sending format," select the option button 3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
Inserting Pictures or Clipart into documents and email messages.
Open Outlook Express Click on the New Mail button
Click in the message area and press enter 3 or 4 times. This will allow you to type above the picture we are inserting. Select Insert – Picture
On the pop up menu click on browse and navigate to the picture that you saved earlier. In this class the picture is located at c:/My Documents/My Pictures/Mary Kay/Time Machine.

Type your message. You can format your text just as you do in a word processor. Address it and send. Open Publisher or Word Select Insert – Picture – Clip Art
 On the top of the Pop up menu click on Clips Online This will take you to the Microsoft Online ClipArt gallery. Search for the clipart you need. Click in the box next to the clips that you want then click on Download. The clips will be downloaded and will now be part of your clip gallery
In Internet Explorer click on Tools - Windows update. It will automatically analyze your computer and tell you what updates are available. Get the highest numbered version of Internet Explorer available. You could also get any updates to your Windows 98. These are free. For Netscape other than 6.xx. First goto C:\Windows\application data\netscape\user And copy the user file to some other folder. This is the folder that contains all of your email addresses and such. Then go to: http://wp.netscape.com/download/0509102/10000-en-win32-4.79-complete-128_qual.html and download version 4.79. Make sure your write down where you save the file on your computer. I would create a Netscape folder in your My Documents folder and save it there. Double click on the saved file to install the update. Either download may take a couple of hours. Searching Open Internet Explorer by clicking on the blue E on your desktop. When it opens click on the SEARCH icon. 
This will open a new window on the left side. Type your search term and press enter.  
The results of your search will show in the main window. You can then close the search window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of it’s window.
 
You can then click on any of the choices in the search. 
Setup a new email account in Outlook Express. Open Outlook Express – select Tools – Email Accounts – select add a new account. On the next screen select POP3. The next screen should look like this: 
Fill in the blanks with your information. Both blanks for sever information should be filled with “mail.zianet.com” The username is the first part of your email address. Leave “Log on using…” blank. When all blanks on this page are complete, click on next. You will have to give the account a name other than Zianet. When you get back to Outlook Express main page select Tools – Email Accounts – View or Change Email Accounts. Select your old email account (Zianet) and delete it. Restart your computer. Setting up the Firewall in Windows XP Windows XP is the only operating system that comes with a built-in firewall. Click on Start – Control Panel – Network and Internet Connections – Network Connections (at the bottom of the page) Right click on your connection and select (left click) properties from the pop up window. On the menu, select the advanced tab and click in the box in beneath Internet Connection Firewall. This should put a check in the box.. Then click OK. Your Firewall is now on. This is an OK firewall. Symantec’s Internet Protection package includes a more powerful firewall that you can customize. Updating your Virus Definitions Connect to the internet then open your virus protection program and select Live Update or Update Virus Definitions. Updating your Java 
Java is a trademark or registered trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc. in the United States and other countries. Speeding Up Your Computer The easiest way to speed up your computer is to remove all of the temporary files from browsing the internet. When ever you visit a website, all of the graphics are stored in a temporary file so that when you go back to that page, it will load faster. This temporary file can become so large that it slows down the computer. To remove the temporary files: Open Internet Explorer (even if you normally use a different browser) Click on Tools in the file menu. 
click on Internet Options at the bottom of the popup menu. In pop up screen, click on the Delete Files button in the middle of the screen. 
You can select the "Delete all offline content" if desired and then click on OK. 
When the "system busy" indicator goes away, close the pop up window. This operation is then complete. |
