open an attachment
Before
you open an attachment.
Make sure you know who
sent it.
Make sure there is a
reason for you to receive it.
Check to see what type
of document or program it is
This area will give
some idea of what program made it and will be needed to open it. Never open one
that ends in exe,
There are many
legitimate reasons for sending attachments. Your director will send many
documents that you can save and modify to your own specifications.
To save these, click on
the name of the attachment.
You will then get a
screen similar to this.
If you do not get this
type of screen then the attachment will either open or will be saved somewhere
on your disk.
With this screen you
can chose to open the document. Then you can see what it is and save it where
you really want to have it.
NEVER REMOVE THIS CHECK
When you chose to open
an attachment you may be asked to find the program. You will have to navigate
and select the program. Most programs will be found on drive C in the Programs
folder.
The last three letters
of the attachment name indicates the type of program

Create
your email document. There will be a button (normally a paper clip) to permit
you to do an attachment. Click on the paper clip, navigate to your file and
double click on the file. The complete file will not show in your document but
will appear as an attachment to the recipients.

Creating
a folder in your email program.
Folders can help you
organize those emails that you want to keep for future reference.
To create a new folder
click on File – New Folder. By using the drop down menu you will then have a
choice of where your new folder will be placed. They folders will be displayed
in alphabetical order within each area.

This is Netscape’s
new folder popup window.
This is Outlook’s
mail screen. Personal folders are shown in the My Shortcuts window.
Often we know that we
saved something and what we think we named it but only the computer knows where
it may be. This will help you find it.
On your desktop (that
is the term for the way your computer looks before you do anything) double click
on the My Computer Icon
You will see a popup
menu showing all of the drives on your computer. Click once on drive C to
indicate which drive you want to search. Select File – Search or Find
(different versions of
Windows will use different terms)
You will see a new
window. The one shown is for Windows ME. But all will have similar areas. Type
enough of what you think the name may be to narrow the search somewhat. You can
see by the example what happens when you type "Mary Kay"
If you can put the
suffix on the name you will narrow the search tremendously. Once you have found
your file in the listing you can either double click on the name or note the
location for future reference.
This process will place an image from
the internet in a folder on your disk so that you can use it again later.
Open your browser (please use Internet Explorer.)
Navigate to the page that has the image you want to use.
Move
your cursor over the and click once with the RIGHT mouse
button. This will show a popup
menu. Click with the LEFT mouse
button on Save Picture As…
A
new popup menu will appear. The
white bar near the top is asking where you want to save the picture on disk.
Be
consistent! Put your pictures in
the same place all the time and then you can find them.
In this class please click on the small arrow on the right side of the
“Save In” bar and then click on drive A in the pop up menu.
The white bar near the bottom labeled
“File Name” is asking what to name the file.
You can rename it to a title that makes sense to you.
In this case just type “Time Machine”.
Leave the “Save as Type” bar alone unless you really know you need it
in another format.
Click on SAVE.
The picture will be there when you need it.
Some email programs allow you
to put backgrounds in your emails. I
recommend that you DO NOT do this. The
programs that don’t accept them make the email unreadable and you do not know
what program the recipients use.
Enabling HTML formatting
To
put images in your e-mail messages, you must first make sure your HTML
formatting is enabled. Oh, don't let the acronym for HyperText Mark-up Language
intimidate you. HTML is the name of the code that is used on most
of the internet for websites and can be used in e-mail messages. Here's how to
enable HTML formatting:
1. Click the
Tools menu on the toolbar, then click Options. The Options dialog box will
appear.
2.
Click the Send tab. Under "Mail sending format," select the option
button
3. Click OK
to close the Options dialog box.
Inserting Pictures or Clipart into documents and email messages.
Open
Outlook Express
Click
on the New Mail button
Click in the message area and press
enter 3 or 4 times. This will allow
you to type above the picture we are inserting.
Select
Insert – Picture
On the
pop up menu click on browse and navigate to the picture that you saved earlier. In this class the picture is located at c:/My Documents/My
Pictures/Mary Kay/Time Machine.

Type
your message. You can format your
text just as you do in a word processor.
Address it and send.
Open Publisher
or Word
Select
Insert – Picture – Clip Art

On the top of the Pop up menu click
on Clips Online
This will take you to the Microsoft
Online ClipArt gallery. Search for
the clipart you need. Click in the
box next to the clips that you want then click on Download.
The clips will be downloaded and will now be part of your clip gallery
In Internet Explorer
click on Tools - Windows update. It will automatically analyze your
computer and tell you what updates are available. Get the highest numbered
version of Internet Explorer available. You could also get any updates to
your Windows 98. These are free.
For Netscape other than
6.xx.
First goto
C:\Windows\application data\netscape\user
And copy the user file to
some other folder. This is the folder that contains all of your email
addresses and such.
Then go to:
http://wp.netscape.com/download/0509102/10000-en-win32-4.79-complete-128_qual.html
and download version
4.79. Make sure your write down where you save the file on your computer.
I would create a Netscape folder in your My Documents folder and save it there.
Double click on the saved file to install the update.
Either download may take
a couple of hours.
Searching
Open Internet Explorer by clicking on the blue E on your desktop. When it opens
click on the SEARCH icon.

This will open a new window on the left side. Type your search term and press
enter.

The results of your search will show in the main
window. You can then close the search window by clicking on the X in the upper
right corner of it’s window.

You can then click on any of the choices in the search.

Accounts – View or Change Email Accounts. Select your old email account (Zianet)
and delete it. Restart your computer.
Setting up the Firewall in
Windows XP
Windows XP is the only
operating system that comes with a built-in firewall.
Click on Start – Control
Panel – Network and Internet Connections – Network Connections (at the bottom of
the page)
Right click on your
connection and select (left click) properties from the pop up window.
On the menu, select the
advanced tab and click in the box in beneath Internet Connection Firewall. This
should put a check in the box..
Then click OK.
Your Firewall is now on.

you can customize.

Speeding Up Your Computer
The easiest way to speed up your computer is
to remove all of the temporary files from browsing the internet. When ever
you visit a website, all of the graphics are stored in a temporary file so that
when you go back to that page, it will load faster. This temporary file
can become so large that it slows down the computer.
To remove the temporary files:
Open Internet Explorer (even if you normally
use a different browser)
Click on Tools in the file menu.

click on Internet Options at the bottom of the
popup menu.
In pop up screen, click on the Delete Files
button in the middle of the screen.

You can select the "Delete all offline
content" if desired and then click on OK.

When the "system busy" indicator goes away,
close the pop up window.
This operation is then complete.
