Tips and Tutorials

Today’s software is so powerful and versatile that it is hard to remember how to make it do many of the things it can do.  I do not pretend to know how to make any one piece of software do all it can do because I have never needed to do some of them.

The help feature included with the software is much more powerful and useful than it used to be.  Still the jargon can sometimes be confusing.

I have a TIPS page on my website that many people have found useful.  http://www.ruidosocomputers.com/Tips.htm

Microsoft has free training available at

I also found a site with ebooks available for training.  Ebooks are books available only in electronic form – they can only be read on the computer or you can use a lot of paper and print it yourself.  Generally you only want to print certain parts.  This site has one free ebook on mail merge.  The other ebooks are kind of pricy but I think they look like good tutorials.

Spyware and Adware

What you see in the advertisements just above could be considered adware!

Both spyware and adware use your computer resources (memory, internet access, cpu, etc.) which can slow down all aspects of your computer.

Spyware is a program that is put in someone's computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties. Spyware is often installed without the user's consent, as you view their site, or as the result of clicking some option in a deceptive pop-up window.

The cookie is a well-known mechanism for storing information about an Internet user on their computer. However, the existence of cookies and their use is generally not concealed from users, who can also disallow access to cookie information. Nevertheless, to the extent that a Web site stores information about you in a cookie that you don't know about, the cookie mechanism could be considered a form of spyware.

Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. The justification for adware is that it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the cost for the user.

Adware has been criticized for occasionally including code that tracks a user's personal information and passes it on to third parties, without the user's authorization or knowledge. This practice has been dubbed spyware and has prompted an outcry from computer security and privacy advocates, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Protecting yourself and removing spyware and adware.

I recommend you download and install both Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware.  They each find things the other misses and SpyBot includes an “immunize” function that protects against spyware.

You should run each about once a month before you defrag your computer.

Spam! Spam! Spam!

If you are not receiving 10 or more unwanted emails every day then you are not really using your email.  Most of us are receiving 30-40 and many over 100 per day.

There are several AntiSpam programs on the market but the best, Norton AntiSpam 2004 works really well with little effort on your part.  Norton AntiSpam 2004 is $39.95.  Call me at 336-7822

Some Internet Service Providers offer Spam Blocking.  This blocks the spam before it ever gets to your computer and generally is free.  This service is offered by Zianet, Verizon, AOL, MSN and others, not all of which have local dialup numbers in Ruidoso.

This is an attempt to provide my customers with timely information.  Let me know what you think.
