Our Costa Rican Villa

Jim and Barbara Dickinson and Jerry and Jan Eygendaal planned another adventure.

We were planning to go to Hawaii but procrastination entered the picture and Jan finally said she had been there and done that.  She wanted to go to Costa Rica.

Manu Villas Dominical Costa Rica Map
We rented the Bosque en el Cielo at the Manu Villas and Spa, Dominical, Costa Rica.

This octagonal vacation rental villa called Bosque en el Cielo is situated on the highest part of the property overlooking the lush green rain forest and the Pacific down below hence the name "Forest In The Sky".

There is one master bedroom upstairs and two large bedrooms downstairs. Each room has private adjoining tile bathrooms with big waterfall showers and terraces overlooking the rain-forest valley.

In San Jose, our day began with breakfast next to the fountain and then delivery of our rental car.  We loaded our luggage and set out on our adventure.  We did not make it out of San Jose' before having an unexpected addition.  I had a fender bender with a Costa Rican taxi.  We were on our way again about an hour later.  We had been warned that the roads were not well marked.  We lost our way, doubled back, paid a toll for the second time and soon began our climb through the mountains of Central Costa Rica.  We were all expecting some valleys with coffee plantations and such.  We found narrow, winding roads with the most dangerous drivers any of us have ever experienced.  They were worse than Paris, Germany or the Texas drivers on the old two lane road through the Hondo Valley.  It was similar to driving down the Ski Run road late in the afternoon.  It took 3 1/2 hours to drive 60 miles.  We were all glad to get to our villa!

The some of the unpaved drive to our villaNone of these pictures show how steep it is!  The grade is often as much as 10%
Our host Grace is an excellent masseuse! What a wonderful way to relax.

We arranged for our hostess to cater our dinner on the night we arrived.  She prepared a wonderful dinner with ceviches and sweet potatoes (different from our American) for appetizers, fresh red snapper (caught by her brother that day) and best of all - we did not have to do a thing!

Our clothes arrive clean and folded on our beds every three days.  The house fairies magically appear and the house, deck and pool are cleaned daily.

We have had two earthquakes that shook us awake in the middle of the night.

The drive to get here is on a gravel road that IS the Coastal Highway.  The drive from the highway to the villa is more than a 6% grade (this is more steep than is legal in the US).  It is definitely a one lane road and we met a loaded dumptruck that was coming down as we were going up!  That was definitely an AW SHIT! moment.  He stopped and we worked our way around.

We have seen iguanas, anteaters, kotamundi, monkeys, snakes (in the bedroom), geckos (on the walls), several species of parrots as well as tucans, vultures, three species of frogs or toads and other animals we have not yet identified.
