We left for the Arenal Volcano area on Tuesday morning May12.  The drive was a very long, grueling day.  We traveled about 9 hours over twisting, winding, hilly two lane roads that were indicated as Interstates on the map.  The roads were filled with some of the most dangerous drivers we have ever experienced.

When we returned to the villa, the computer keyboard would not work, so we could not add to the website.  Our landlord, Alex supplied us with a keyboard.

We stopped for breakfast in Quepas after driving about 20 miles on a rough, gravel road.  This fountain was in the courtyard of the cafe.

We stayed at the Arenal Observatory Lodge.  We wanted to get the best view of the volcano.  Click here for photos and here for a slide show

Jungle hikeOur guide was excellent!  He was constantly pointing out plants and animals that we would never have noticed or identified.
It was more than a morning walk! This growth is only 20 years old after the vocano's eruption in '89.  Like Mt. St Helen, the forest was devastated.
Jerry, Jan and Barbara went for another hike in the afternoon
It was level to start but the climb up the mountain was very strenuousRocks ejected from the volcano created fields of craters.
